This Act replaces fragmented colonial-era provisions (such as the Foreigners Act, 1946) and introduces a comprehensive, digital, and security-oriented immigration framework. It seeks to regulate the entry, stay, movement, and exit of foreign nationals in India while balancing security and humanitarian obligations.
